Jeff Fisher believes in the strong connection between physical training, and feeling good mentally and emotionally ? and is sharing that connection with some of Winnipeg?s most vulnerable people.
?One of our trainers, Karly Proux, came back with tears in her eyes because she was so well received,? said Fisher, president of Elite Fitness. ?By the end of the class people were laughing, having fun, and just feeling good.?
Project Echo and Elite Performance are working together to provide Siloam Mission?s guests with two movement workshops a week. The classes begin with light stretching, move into aerobic activities, and then finish again with stretching. The classes also offer information about why stretching and exercising is important, as well as how to do it right.
One guest, Richard, is looking forward to trying out the class for the first time on Friday, after recently being told by his doctor that he has high cholesterol, and at high risk for heart problems or stroke.
?I want to do something for it ? I?d rather exercise than take pills,? said Richard. ?I went to the YMCA and they charge about $40 a month ? nobody else in Winnipeg offers a free gym.?
One thing that helps keep Richard motivated is that the movement classes are done in groups.
?I?ve tried exercising on my own, but it didn?t work. If I see someone else doing it, it?s good, they push you ? it motivates me.?
Troy Westwood, Development Coordinator for Project Echo and former Winnipeg Blue Bomber, said it?s important for the public to realize that it takes a balance of mind, body, spirit, and emotion to be a healthy individual.
?Do all of us not benefit ? when members of our community who need a little help to get on track ? when those individuals become empowered to be independent,? said Westwood.
